Jay Stachowicz, a professor in the Department of Evolution and Ecology, has been named the interim director of the Coastal and Marine Sciences Institute (CMSI). Stachowicz succeeds the institute’s founding director, Rick Grosberg, a distinguished professor emeritus of evolution and ecology who retired from the university earlier this year.

The Coastal and Marine Sciences Institute (CMSI) is thrilled to announce that Professor Jay Stachowicz has accepted the role of interim Director of CMSI.

With Jay at the helm, CMSI launches into the second decade of its exciting journey. His vision and dedication will be pivotal in cementing CMSI’s leadership of coastal and marine science at @ucdavis; we look forward to stronger connections and collaborations between researchers and students across our campus and beyond.

With heartfelt thanks, we reflect on the transformative era that Dr. Rick Grosberg has led at the helm of the Coastal and Marine Sciences Institute (CMSI). As Rick embarks on a well-deserved journey into retirement after 40+ years at UC Davis, including a decade as the Director of CMSI, we recognize his indelible contributions and the countless students he has inspired.

Distinguished Professor Walter Leal is shining a spotlight on some of our newest emeriti, featuring them in a video and a lecture series. The next talk, by paleobiologist Geerat Vermeij, is scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15.

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Sean Godwin to the Bodega Marine Laboratory and Coastal and Marine Sciences Institute community. He will be joining the Environmental Science & Policy department as Assistant Professor of Sustainable Aquaculture and Coastal Systems and will be based at Bodega Marine Laboratory beginning in September 2023.

The Coastal and Marine Sciences Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Kristin Aquilino as the new Associate Director of the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory (BML).

The Coastal and Marine Science Institute is pleased to announce the ten recipients of the UC Davis Bilinski fellowship at Bodega Marine Laboratory for 2022-2023. Russell J. and Dorothy S. Bilinski’s life goal was to be “independent and challenged intellectually.” They strongly valued self-sufficiency, a sense of ambition, and above all, responsibility.

We are delighted to announce that Dr. Alyssa Griffin will start a position as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at UC Davis on July 1, 2022!

We welcome Dr. Griffin’s continued collaboration with the Coastal and Marine Sciences Institute as she transitions from being a Postdoctoral Fellow to an Assistant Professor, and hope that you will join us in congratulating Dr. Griffin and welcoming her to this new role.
