Following finalization of the CMSI Strategic Plan, this year we will adopt more of a workshop approach for our gathering. The aim is to generate action plans for cross cutting research themes.

  • In the morning … a series of panel discussions exploring different research themes
  • In the afternoon … breakout groups, each centered on a different research theme, developing ideas and identifying actions towards novel interactions

Through the wrap-up plenary session, follow-up discussions, and a written report, this workshop will outline an agenda for integrative research – how CMSI can best advance ideas and new knowledge beyond traditional pairings.

Goals

  • Articulate research themes – give meaning to words in strategic plan.
    • Share ideas and identify big-thinking research opportunities
(advancing ideas and new knowledge that cut across traditional pairings)
  • Develop cross cutting action plans – give meaning to CMSI integration.
    • Link people into working groups

Research themes identified in Strategic Plan:

  • Connectivity … “Connectivity between coastal and marine populations, communities, and ecosystems; and coupling between natural and human systems.”

  • Resources … “Sustainable management of marine resources, including fisheries and aquaculture production.”

  • Environmental change … “Historical, contemporary, and future impacts of climate change, harvesting, pollution, and other
human activities on marine organisms, populations, ecosystems, and economies.”  And “Adaptation to, and mitigation of, the impacts of rapidly changing coastal and marine
environments and ecosystems.”
